    ND Grads

I may be trying to run before I can walk here. However, I recently bought a set of Cokin ND grads. I would love to capture some great sunset / sunrise shots.

A recent trip had me camping out on the North Yorkshire Moors to capture the sunset / sunrise and my results were pretty poor. Not that the sunset / sunrise was that spectacular which did not help.

Any tips on how to get the best out of ND grads?

Mark. The video link was really useful. Nice and simple.

Gary, I will post my feeble efforts shortly, although I will be totally embarassed!

    Re: ND Grads

Here is my first feeble ND Grad effort. Bearing in mind this was simply an experiment to try and work out how to use grads, so I was not particularly trying to capture the worlds best landscape shot. It was darn cold up on the moors at 10pm too!!!!!! Tent was not much warmer. I overslept and missed the sunrise.

When I got the 30 or so images onto my laptop, I was quite dissapointed. It got me thinking did I even need the grads? But, I have to start learning somewhere.

I have not adjusted this image with software. This is what I shot. HELP!!!!

I have been thinking of ordering a ND grad but on 2 of my 3 lenses the focusing part with the thread turns….. how can you keep the grad where you want it without messing the focus?

In theory, depending on how 'tight' the filter holder mounts to the filter adaptor ring, it may be possible to hold the filter setup in place as you focus.
In practice (I tried it years ago on a lens with rotating front element) - it can put quite a strain on the focus motors if using auto.
Try using manual focus would be my best suggestion. One hand on filter holder to keep in place - one hand on focus ring - as the holder does rotate around the adaptor.
The other option would be to hand hold the grad - something that is quite possible and popular in the states I believe. Never tried this though as I always
worry this could introduce small camera movement (especially if it's freezing cold ).
Best option is to always go for lenses with non rotating front elements if wanting to use a filter holder setup. However, I fully realise that doesn't help
    with existing kit.
