You find like many things in life you tend to get what you pay for. I am quite happy to use brands such as B&W, Heliopan, Rodenstock and I even have a couple of Nikons, who actually make some really nice glass. Canon do some protect filters as well. I tend to find the biggest difference is the quality of the parts and fittings, so a nice solid brass ring will not stick or bind like some of the cheaper materials, also the better filters are far easier to clean. Some of the better quality Hoya are not too bad, but when I have had them I have tended to replace with others over time.
