    Lightweight monopod advice required

I need some advice and help please.

I'm looking to source a reasonably priced lightweight monopod that is quite compact when not extended and one that should be able to take the weight of a 300mm f2.8 lens attached to a 7D/1D III body.

Your suggestions or recommendations greatly appreciated.

    Most photography stores supply monopods.
Here is a link to Jessops. Some cheap and nasty and some really expensive but a good selection to get you going.

I have the Manfrotto 679 which when not extended is roughly 24".
I don't use it very often but my mate borrowed it the other day for use with his Nikon D3 and Sigma 150-500 and it worked perfectly well.
    I have used it with my 1D3 c/w 100-400 + 1.4 extender.

I have the same Manfrotto 679 and it works OK for me its not the lightest on the market.

Go you your local camera shop and ask to try one first.

I have the Manfrotto 680. its not the lightest but its strong and can be trusted to take the 1D with a 300 2.8. It's telescopic in three pieces so folds down quite small. I store mine on the side of my camera bag. The base isn't wide but just a little bigger than some of the cheap varieties which means it doesn't sink in the ground quite as easily. I also use it as a walking stick on tricky terrain. One of the best buys I've made.

As above but if you are tall you may have difficulty getting one that is comfortable to use. I'm 6Ft4 and have the manfrotto 479B but have also got the trigger grip to raise the camera that added 9" or so. So its important to try them out first and find one that fits you and your camera

I would suggest go for quality, may be a few pounds more. I would reccommend a Gitzo Carbon Monopod, they cost about £100 but worth every penny. Its one of the toughest monopds I,ve ever come across, I,ve even used it for climbing....................I bought one because I knew it was tough, good with heavy lenses, and will last a very long time.
