    Car Window Camera mounts

    Hi
Does anyone have any recommendations for Car Window Camera/Lens mounts other than pipe insulation or a beanbag?

I would like one that would support a 40D with a 100-400L attached.

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Car Window Camera mounts

Thanks both of you for the feedback.
I wanted to use my car as a hide, therefore the Kirk looks more appropriate to my requirements, unfortunately money is always an issue so I'll need to continue looking for a while to see if i can find a cheaper alternative.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Re: Car Window Camera mounts

I bought one from 7-Day Shop for about £10 which was ok ... I'm not sure it would have self-supported my kit because the ball-head was quite small but it certainly provided a stable mount providing I kept hold of the camera ...

    Re: Car Window Camera mounts

Thank you all for your suggestions

I purchased a Manfrotto 234RC, 243 Car Window Pod With 234 Tilt Top Head from Amazon.
The build quality was OK, I intended to use my current ball head with it rather than the 234 Tilt Top, which which I was going to use with my Monopod.

Unfortunately I found for my car it didn't work very well.
The mount and both heads could support the weight of a 100-400 no problem but it was the position that was wrong.

Will my Ball head, and the window almost fully unwound, it was virtually impossible to get my head to the viewfinder of the camera because of the height of my car windows and the roof padding in the car. With the 234 Tilt Head it was slightly better but still a problem. I drive an old Mercedes E CLass so they are probably average size windows, and I don't have a particularly big head :) There just was insufficient room to use it effectively. I also found that you had to lean right over to try and use it, which was really uncomfortable for more than a few seconds at a time. So for a normal saloon car I wouldn't recommend it. If you have a van or a car with tall windows and very little roof padding then it would work better.

The monopod head was also a disappointment. It only adjust up and down and that is controlled by a knob on the right hand side rather than the usual left hand side of my other Manfrotto heads and obviously you need your right hand to use the focus and shutter control on the camera. You could always reverse the attachment plate, but I decided I was unhappy with the design and want consistency in the way I attach a plate.

Fortunately I bought it from Amazon and was able to return it and get a full refund.

So I am back to using Copper Pipe insulating foam and will probably now get a bean bag.

From the suggestions you have all offered, I think the Kirk Window Mount WM2 suggested by CSD_Images would offer the best solution because it throws the camera/lens mounting point further back into the vehicle which therefore makes it easier to use, but at £255 - its quite expensive.

Thanks again for all your help

Is it a four door - could you not use the back seats and then it may be easier to shuffle around to get your eye to the view finder?
