I can't afford a genuine Canon one so does anyone have recommendations?

Laura, Like Pete I would recommend the 7day shop batteries, I have them in my 50d grip and have never had any problem with them.

Thanks for drawing my attention to this, Pete. I see that the LP - e6 Canon 5D Mk II compatibles are now fully decoded! I've used a third party clone for over a year but it doesn't communicate with the camera and has a separate charger. These are under a tenner and can be charged in the original charger. Sounds good to me.
