Have finally decided and purchased a Jobu gimbal head, although a fair bit more in cost to the Manfrotto 393, for me personally I found it easier to set the up and down and the left to right movements and after some practise I found I could set it so that I could move it on both planes with one finger so that sold it for me. Re: Wimberley Head

Not looked at Feisol yet but shall do so in a mo so thanks for the tip. I have a few weeks before making a purchase so plenty of time to take in advice and look around.

I don't need to walk far so for most of my birding so weight is not a major consideration.

Once the tripod is sorted the real fun starts when it comes to choosing a lens, buts thats a new thread for later.

The Manfrotto 393 head has arrived. Really impressed with the build quality and setup on my lightweight(ish) tripod with a 7D+grip and 300 f2.8+1.4x feels like it will be ideal.
