    Non-Canon Battery Grips

    Hi,

I've recently upgraded my 300D to a new 550D, and am thinking about getting a battery grip.

The trouble is, of course, that the Canon one is around £110 today, whereas a non-Canon equivalent can be had for under £30 (both prices from Amazon).

Does anyone have any experiences, warnings or advice about the non Canon version ?

    Re: Non-Canon Battery Grips

    Hi Drew,

I have a non Canon grip (a Meike) on a 7D and it works fine. In fact I prefer it to the Canon one because it has a built in clock/timer and the rubberised grips feel better to me. Had it almost a year now and no problems at all. Main downside is that it is probably not as weatherproof as the Canon.

However, other people will always buy Canon...

    Hi RonL,

Sounds like you've had a good experience with it, and are happy with it. Decisions decisions !

I bought a Meike grip for my 50D from ebay a few weeks back & am happy enough with it that I've just bought one for my 30D today. Cant grumble at £26.99 inc p&p

Also got 4 more batteries [Energizer] from 7dayshop for £23.96 [they've now gone up to £9.99 each]

Ahhhh, the ring flash - I have one of those.........

TBH, I would not bother at all, they only offer about half a stop of light (at least mine does)

    Re: Non-Canon Battery Grips

I bought the BG-E8 grip at the same time as the camera (550D). I took it off the other day and it felt very weird without it. I can't comment on the aftermarket versions but my Canon grip with 2 batteries lasts what seems like forever. I wouldn't change it for anything
