I just bought today a Manfrotto 393 to go with my Manfrotto tripod, but I was tempted with this. Check this link out...I have just had a play with the 393 and I like it so far.

Also thinking about the Really Right Stuff replacement lens foot rather than a lens plate. Again thoughts/experiences welcome.

You won't go far wrong with the Gitzo and Wimberley combination. I don't have experience of the lens foot though, is it a lower profile or something like that which makes you consider it?

Yes, it's lower profile and eliminates the need for a plate on the original lens foot, so one lens thing between lens and support. Downside is it looks like you loose being able to carry the lens by the foot.

Went with the Gitzo 5541LS, Wimberley II and Wimberley lens plate combo for the 500.

Another useful item is a levelling base. I have the Gitzo but Acratech also make one.
