Canon WFT-E5B Wireless File Transmitter for EOS 7D

As most of my photography is sports related i was thinking of investing in one of these. Canon WFT-E5B Wireless File Transmitter for EOS 7D.
Anybody used one? Is it a good stopgap option as it will be another year before i am able to upgrade to a current 1d body? would i be better going for an older second hand 1d? I am expecting to attend some of the major upcoming swimming events including next years olympic trials in march at the new olympic venue and the functionality of wireless file transmission would aid in the sale of images.

Never used one, sorry. But that's exactly the reason it's designed for - transmitted to laptop - laptop straight to editors desk. You would still have to buy a wireless transmitter for a 1 series (or an Eye-Fi SD card),
so an upgrade would not instantly solve your dilemma. I don't think you would go wrong in buying it, and resale at a later date would still command a good price.

Another option if you are not moving around much is to shoot tethered, I do this on occasion, but not for sport.

It really depends on your set up. If you are wiring straight to some one else who will process and name the pics then it would be an advantage. However if you have to name and process the pics yourself its not going to be much quicker than taking the card out of your camera and slipping it in the laptop. I've tried shooting tethered but found it very restrictive when you only have a small space to work and are trying to balance the laptop on your knee whilst shooting the action. Using a laptop at all in sports conditions can be a nightmare (they weren't designed to cope with strong light and water) so if you can cut out using the lpatop entirely then it might be the way to go but if you still have to use it I'd be tempted to save the money for the 1D fund.
