Question Sensor cleaning fluid for 5D (Mk1)

Does anyone have a definitive answer on which sensor cleaning fluid should (or should not) be used with the original 5D? Any searches I have done appear to bounce around either recommending or warning against using Eclipse or E2 (because of the filter composition / construction).

Anyone able to recommend a fluid for the 5D?

    Thanks.

Eclipse E2 is considered safe, Eclipse is not. From memory, the 5D sensor (anti-aliasing filter) had a different coating, that the original fluid could disolve if your cleaning regime was at all aggressive. Tin oxide for the coating springs to mind, but I would have to "phone a friend" or "ask the audience" to be sure.

What Colin said. Eclipse E2 = Good. Standard Eclipse = Bad.

Yes. E2 + 1D Mk III is fine. Standard Eclipse is NOT fine on a Mark III

Thank God I didn't use the Eclipse and bought E2 - More luck than judgement, in my case.

Well it seems my information is out of date

    http://www.photosol.com/documents/ec...nouncement.pdf

As of August 2009 the manufacturers of Eclipse have concluded that original Eclipse causes no harm to tin oxide sensors. They've also reformulated Eclipse and this is now the only product they sell; Eclipse E2 has been withdrawn.

Does this mean E2 is no good for the 1dmkiii before I start slapping it on ?

No, E2 is fine for the Mark III. It was specifically formulated for tin-oxide coated sensors. I've also used it on my Mark III. They've just concluded that standard Eclipse is fine too and so withdrawn E2 as an unneeded product.

p.s. Don't "slap it on" a single drop on a PecPad is usually enough. If you soak the pad you'll leave smears which are a pain to remove. They do no harm, but they're a pain.

Dear "Frightened from Bucks", I'll conceed it's a bit buttock clenching the first time you do it, but it rapidly becomes little more than an irritating chore. Back in the bad old days I used to have to do the 10D and Mark II nearly every weekend. Contrary to popular belief you have to be almost spectacularly ham-fisted to any real harm.
