Best to spend a day or half a day with somebody who knows whats what and at least that way you can ask questions

Dave's right, I bought a few books to help me master the art :'(
But there is nothing better than a few lessons with an expert, which is worth the extra expense I think.

All of us are still learning though ............ ;D

Digital SLR Masterclass by Andy Rouss, would be my recommendation for a back to basic.
    Stunning wildlife photography too.

thanks for the speedy replies guys :)

i am better at learning on a one to one basis so maybe that is the way to go, but if i read first it may ensure that i do not ask fundemential questions.

Or stick them here, huge collective experience and expertise. Not a structured run through the subject though I grant you.

This may be too late now, but I post anyway. American Jon Cox have written a book called "Digital nature photography" which explains everything you need to know to get started in a very simple way. This is a book I'll recommend to every newbie, and even more experienced amateur photographers may get something out of reading it.

I did a winter time evening class on photography. It was pretty basic, but it taught me stuff I didn't know and I still keep in touch with the guy that ran the course.
