I received a copy today, always worth reading about things - there will always be knowledge to gain or forgotten knowledge to job back out of the depths of the mind :)

Got my copy yesterday and can't wait to get out and put it into practice. For those of us that are still fairly new to manual operation, it makes the penny drop.

yer i fell for the f22 (see recent shots) they are at f22....this was as a direct result of reading this book. Further reading around leads me to think BP is talking about full frame camera sensor based on equivalent 35mm film....iam using a crop x1.6 in my 550 which means i already get much more D of F. For landscapes next out i'll be experimenting the hyperfocal distance but working closer to this article i posted recently PJ. Morley » Hyperfocal Distance Made Easy check out the equivalent distances suggested for the sensor f-stop and focal length your using, there is of course a mathematical equation you can plug in in the field......i for one aint going there (just yet!)
iam on the second run now with BP...yer generally very good, i also like the pre-focusing the camera for the car journey great idea.
wonder if anyone would like to comment on these rule's of thumb ive found...
11:30 idea...f11 focal length 30mm hyperfocal distance = 11ft therefore everything from 5.5ft to infinity will be in focus
8:18 idea f8 focal length 18mm hyperfocal distance = 8 ft 4ft to infinity in focus
test shot, tweak you should be good.
These of course are going to be more user friendly when its -13 outside and you need faff to be down to a minimum, i guess you have to find the specifics of you chosen lens when all said and done.

Your rules of thumb stack up correct to me.
I also believe that using live view, if you have it, with 10x zoom on the point of focus, very useful indeed for working with manual focus and hyperfocal distances.

I agree also and particularly with the live view option.

Thanks for that Stu/Nigel...i have live view, will have a play with that idea as well.
