Congrats, did you trade in the 7D or do you now own both....

Might have accidentally sent my 7D + Grip away and it came back as a 1D MKIV... no idea how that happened.
Had a brief play with it so far, got the AF all set up and ready to go and am looking forward to an air show... I might actually make it to Biggin on Sunday to give it a try :)

How careless of you
I am sure you will have a lot of fun with it.

I'd be interested to know how you've set up the auto focus with airshows in mind as I intend using ny 1d4 at Waddington.

Wasn't happy with the results I was getting with it at air shows. The noise levels at ISO100 were too high for my liking and I seemed to be losing detail to noise and diffraction when the low shutter speeds I need forced a small aperture.
I got some excellent shots with it wildlife wise and of my dog etc (mostly at higher ISOs which it seems to do better with, relatively) and my air show stuff looks ok on web sizes but I want to be printing at A3 or more which is where it was becoming obvious. I have been disappointed in most of the air show results so far and that is just annoying given the money spent on the body. I was happier with most of my 40D shots from the last show I went to but I want the extra resolution.

James, your last post very eloquently explains the reasoning behind upgrading your gear to a newer and better model.
This is something of a contrast the "mmmm...shiny....me want" approach to equipment upgrades that I'm used to. An interesting approach, this logic thing, but I'm not sure it'll catch on![]()

James we sing from the same hymn sheet, glad you kept the 40D as the ugly sister, sounds awful when you click the shutter button in comparison, but Ive always been pleased with the results from the 40D.
PS get the thing in machine gun mode young man.

So, would you guys advise against upgrading from the 40D to a 7D?
I've noticed a lot of negative comments regarding noise at low ISO settings but most of the images on here look pretty good IMO

At web sizes it isn't too bad when you start looking at much larger versions the noise becomes much more noticable. It does seem to depend on the nature of what you're shooting as well, the noise just seemed to hide the detail on the aircraft I was shooting.
I have had some lovely images out of it but wasn't happy with it for my main subject, aviation.

Thanks James.
Perhaps I'll wait to see if they address this issue with the next model - or save for a second hand 1D Mk3.

Theres a guy with a 7D I met locally from another Forum. Perhaps I'll suggest we meet up and we could swap cameras for the afternoon.
I used to love the 40D but comparing it to the 5D Mk2, IQ doesn't come close.
I know I'm wrong in comparing the 2 cameras but thats why I wondered if the IQ of the 7D was closer to the 5 than the 40.
