Just really want to know if anyone has experienced a similar occurrance.
The night before the Fountains Abbey meet I thought I had better chase the bunnies from my 5d2 sensor. So I got out my Artic Butterfly, wizzed it around a bit as per instructions then wiped the sensor. Job done or so I thought.
I put a lens back on, switched on the camera, and went to take a trial shot. The camera just would not fire. the top panel showed that there was no f stop it was just showing 00 - oh dear, I thought, thats torn it. I tried a number of different lenses, some only worked with manual focus some not at all.
What I thought it could be was a static charge from the artic butterfly mucked up the circuitry because after discontecting the lens and touching the lens contacts it started working normally again.
I'd be interested if anyone has any other possible explanations

I had the same problem with mine. It happened when I switched lenses. Took the lens off again and it was okay when I out it back on? I think Pete is right.

I got a free sensor clean by Canon at an event and was able to watch and talk to the technician as he did the business. They clean the whole camera, not just the sensor and it was surprising how much dirt came off the lensmount and contacts. If a lens is attached, they also clean all externals, including mount and contacts.
Those guys are scrupulous and not only use a high power loupe to view the sensor, but also other areas of the camera. He did explain the need to keep contacts and lensmounts clean, to prevent any miscommunication between the body and lens.

I've had no trouble with mine, but I haven't put the artic butterfly near it yet.

Seems like it was a "known" problem Andre as the new firmware update resolves it...
Firmware Version 2.0.3 incorporates five enhancements to the movie function and a fix to the manual sensor cleaning function of the EOS 5D Mark II camera.
Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.
NTSC:
1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed - actual 29.97 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added - actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 30 fps (changed - actual 29.97 fps)
PAL:
1920×1080 : 25 fps (added - actual 25.0 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added - actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 25 fps (added - actual 25.0 fps)
Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64 levels).
Adds a histogram display (brightness or RGB) for shooting movies in manual exposure.
Adds shutter-priority AE mode (Tv) and aperture-priority AE (Av) mode to the exposure modes for shooting movies.
Changes the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz.
Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)

That eases my concerns Hadrian - thanks for the info
