Question Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Anyone?

I am contemplating upgrading from my 'nifty-fifty' to either the EF 50mm f1.4 or the Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM. At the moment I am ploughing through relevant reviews but would welcome feedback of either lens on a full-frame body from anyone using them. Thanks!

Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Anyone?

    Hi,

I have the Sigma 50mm 1.4 and it is a fabulous lens. I looked at the Canon 1.4 beforehand thinking it was the way to go, but when I used it I was left thinking it felt cheap and nasty compared to other Canon glass I have used. I have a 40D and built up a few lenses since having an Eos 1 and then going digital with the 10D then 40D. I didn't think I would ever buy 3rd party lenses but took the chance on the Sigma after reading many reviews. It is not subtle on the body but feels very well made and the results are gorgeous. I have the Canon 100mm 2.0 which was great on film but a bit too long with a 1.6 crop, and this is just as good as that lens image wise and feels as well made.
I don't think you would regret it over the Canon 1.4.

Thanks for the response - I was beginning to think that no-one out there was using the Sigma! For some reason 50mm f1.4's seem hard to come by at the moment. My local dealer has neither the EF nor the EX in stock, same with Canon UK and Sigma UK, neither of which have any idea of when they will receive new stock. I wonder if there will be an EF 50mm f1.4 Mk II announced this autumn?

Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Anyone?

That's odd then. My Jessops had the Canon 50mm in stock, however the copy they had had gunk inside the lens so i said no (plus it feels flimsy compared to other primes made by Canon). I found my Sigma used in mint condition for £200 so went for it.
No idea if there is about to be a MK2 version but none of the rumours sites have suggested it...

You could always go for a Zeiss version :-)

Another vote here for the Sigma 50mm 1.4 - bokeh and sharpness at 1.4 is much better than that of the canon version - word on the street says canon maybe making a remake of the canon 50mm 1.4 and turning it in to an L... lets hope so..

Re: Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Anyone?

As I said in one of my previous posts. The 50mm Sigma is 50mm lens that's hard to beat. I've now splashed the cash to buy one since I miss it from my Nikon days. It was much better than the Nikkor 1.4D and 1.4G, and likewise the Canon 1.4 EF does not compare.

It's more expensive than the Canon even when second hand but if you have the funds available, you won't regret it.

This is one lens where the bulk is more than matched by the build and optical quality. This is a 5star lens

Thanks for the replies - looks like the Sigma gets the vote! However, if Canon release an EF50mm f1.4 Mk II in the near future...
