never liked b/w stuff and rarely comment unless i like it. (i dont understand why anyone would want the colour removed.)
i like it.
probably cos its very old looking property that belong to b/w age and it simply wears it well.

Decided to have a nose at an image I took a while back when in York. I'd previously HDR'd and Tonemapped the image to some peoples tastes and not to others as is normally the case with tonemapped images :)
Anyway, I thought I'd pull this one out of the archives and give it another whirl. Yes it is HDR'd again however with some different adjustments and this time with the gradient map treatment.
Your thoughts and gasps of horror (or maybe one or two oohs and ahhs) most respectfully appreciated :D..

And to respectfully disagree with George, I love b&w my reasons being firstly colour blind so I see tones and shades better than colour and secondly I was brought up on b&w photographs lol.
So for me Ian I like it a lot, not a big fan of HDR and Lez F will convert me this year Im told. Great lead in lines and plenty of interest for me - well done.

I like it too. It looks like some sort of lithograph from an old Dickens book.
And thats the rub its a lovely image but not a true photographic representation.
Arty I guess

Only the little clump just beyond the people that detracts, otherwise a mighty fine piece of work Ian.

I'll go along with thator maybe one or two oohs and ahhs
The B & W treatment works well but the people in the background are a bit of a distraction - "modern" slightly spoils the olde worldy effect
I still like it though

Hi Ian. I've been looking at some HDR photography lately and you don't tend to see black and white conversions. Looks great.

I like your treatment of this - good details and tones - for me the people draw you in to the image. Well worked.

Thanks again all. Much appreciated. :)
Jon, I've found that processing the HDR to the required colour levels you want and then running the Gradient Map in CS3 produces very interesting results. :)

Wait for it. Ian.....HDR.... I,..... I just..can't bring myself to say it. It's, well it's not (chokes and gags) not ..unappealing. It might even, when all things are considered, be viewed, in certain quarters, as being striking. I like it, in spite of the protests of every cell in my body to the contrary.A great sense of depth and luminosity has been achieved by your pp. Excellent image - may even try HDR one day.....perhaps.....if I have a lot of spare time.....nothing on tv......nothing in the house needs painting..........

Hehe it's all good Alun. I know how HDR can be like marmite :)
However I'm very pleased you like it :)

This is very dickensian/harry potter esque and I like it alot. An unusal take on a well known scene that does really work. I cant decide if I find the people distracting or if they add to the spookiness. Nice one...
